Considerations When Hiring a Contractor for Your Project

Concrete

There are many things to think about when hiring a contractor for your project.
Is the contractor licensed? Is the license active?
Does the contractor have insurance?
Is the contractor bonded of at least $15,000?
If applicable, does the contractor carry Workers Compensation insurance? Contractors who do not hire employees can file as exempt for Workers Compensation insurance.
Will they provide you with references?
Did you get at least 3 estimates and does each estimate match “apples to apples” for the work to be done?

By law, a contractor is not allowed to ask for more than 10% or $1,000.00 as a down payment, whichever is less.
Always do your homework before hiring a contractor. Familiarize yourself with the California State License Board website (www.cslb.ca.gov). This website provides you with the licensing, bonding and insurance information of the company you are considering.
